Less known

The Zerelia Lakes, outside Almyros, just 45 minutes by car from Volos, formed after a meteorite fall, are one of the lesser known but equally impressive attractions of the area. Lakes formed by a meteorite fall are extremely rare. There are very few in Europe, while in Greece they are the only ones.

The aesthetic forest of Kouri, is the only oak forest in a lowland area in Europe, 2 km outside Almyros. The recreation area has ponds, bridges, a playground and a zoo with deer, roe deer, ducks, swans and peacocks.

Also the mountain Othrys, also known as the mountain of the Titans, much less known, but with a special beauty for discerning walkers. According to Greek mythology, the “old gods” Titans had refuge there, who were attacked by the “new gods” who had camped on Olympus. The battles were fierce and shocked the whole world. In the end, the gods of Olympus were the victors. On the mountain Othrys, after the titanic battle, Zeus assigned the nymph Othryida to shepherd his herds, which consisted of oxen. Thus the mountain took its name from the nymph. A visit to the mountain will confirm that, even today, thousands of cattle graze freely on the slopes of the mountain. The meats of the region are renowned for their quality, while livestock farming is the main occupation of the residents of the area.

Finally, the picturesque seaside village of Achilleion, with its quality taverns, from where in the summer months you can take the boat for a day trip to Skiathos.
