Local traditions

There are several local traditions that have survived to this day, mainly in the villages of Pelion. One of the most beautiful is the “Maids of Pelion”. After many years of effort, Makrinitsa managed to keep the custom alive and in recent years it has been revived in other villages of Pelion, usually in the first days of May. Also, on May Day and the Day of the Life-Giving Spring, the festival in Trikeri is also interesting, with the exceptionally beautiful traditional Trikeri costumes in which the young women of the village dress up on these days. There are many festivals in honor of the saints of each region, while there is no shortage of celebrations, such as the cherry festival in Agios Lavrentios, the olive festival in Drakeia, the chestnut festival in Xourichti and the honey festival in Pouri, the wine festival in Nea Anchialos, etc.

There are many cultural events in the area, especially in the summer. There are many festivals such as the Pau Argalasti Monastery Festival, the Hortos Festival, which has been organized every year by the Angelini-Chatzinikos Cultural Foundation for at least 40 years, the International Pelion Festival with a 25-year history, and of course the Musical Village in Agios Lavrentios, which is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

In the city of Volos, and mainly in the two open-air municipal theaters, many concerts and performances take place throughout the summer.
